I look at sentiment 3 ways: market based indicators, investor surveys (like AAII), and positioning (like CoT and NAAIM).
CNN's F&G Index is made up of several market-based metrics, which is why I track it.
I also frequently say in my reports that sentiment is not a good signal on its own (as you highlight) but is a condition. When bearish sentiment shows up w/ positive breadth divergences, that's a good thing. Bullish sentiment with negative breadth divergences is a bad thing, which is why I'm pointing it out in this report. Hope that helps clear up the analysis.
